Job
Sharing Internal Best Practices
Sharyn Tams & Elaine Parker, Management
Assistants, Administration
Since May 2007, Sharyn
Tams and Elaine Parker have had the pleasure of sharing the
responsibilities as Management Assistants in the SRB
Administration department.
But, the circumstances that led to this successful
arrangement were poles apart. Elaine,
transitioning into retirement, preferred to work on a part-time
basis. Meanwhile
Sharyn, who had previously worked for Moffitt for eight years,
was moving back into the country after living in Cyprus.
Job sharing has proved to be highly beneficial for both Elaine
and Sharyn. Elaine
wanted less time and I wanted more, says Sharyn.
Therefore Elaine, who wanted to keep her hands in
Moffitt, works one 4-day week. And
Sharyn, who travels quite a bit, enjoys the flexibility of
working three 4-day weeks.
Both are very pleased with the results.
Sharyn
and Elaine understand the importance of communication within
their flexible work arrangement.
They make sure to leave notes for one another and
schedule meetings during times that are congruent with their
work schedules. Both
are also very flexible and willing to fill in for one another
when necessary. Elaine
and I are both extremely happy with our arrangement and that
makes us happy employees, says Sharyn.
