Telecommuting

Teri Lancaster, Retention
Specialist, Human Resources
Teri Lancaster recently made
the transition from a previous position in Business Analysis
where she was already participating in a flexible work
arrangement. During
the transition to her position as a Retention Specialist, she
noticed that others in her new department were also
participating in various flexible work arrangements.
Therefore, Teri communicated to her manager that she was
interested in telecommuting which she had experience in doing
from her previous position. The negotiation of her flexible work arrangement began in May
2007 and Teri was able to begin her new schedule shortly
thereafter. Teri
currently spends four days in her office at Moffitt and one work
day at home.
Meeting professional obligations has not been a problem says
Teri. If I am
scheduled to attend an on-site meeting on the days that I am
currently telecommuting from home, I actually either change my
telecommute day to another day or op-out that week.
Teri is very satisfied with her current work arrangement.
She enjoys not having to deal with rush hour traffic
during her work day at home.
Due to fewer interruptions, she is also able to better
prioritize and strategically focus on projects.
I believe that I am less stressed as an overall
individual, says Teri.
Dena Gaeta, Grant/Contract
Specialist, Basic Science Administration
Before making a decision,
Dena Gaeta and her Division Administrator took the time to
review and consider flexible work arrangements that could work
within their department. We
reviewed the different options flextime, 4 day work week and
work from home, says Dena.
After some deliberating, Dena and her Division Administrator
chose telecommuting. Dena
states, [we] decided what the best option for both of us
would be. With
the option to reconsider, both were very comfortable with the
selection.
Dena now telecommutes from home one day a week.
She uses the quiet time at home to stay focused on
work without the interruption of phone calls and unexpected
customers. She also
takes pleasure in a better work-life balance stating, I
believe this arrangement has allowed me the luxury to better
balance my home and work life and to fulfill my goal of being
more available to my family.
She
maintains her commitment to Moffitt and her department by making
herself available for any professional obligations that conflict
with her telecommuting schedule.
