Frequently Asked Questions about
Part-Time
Is it possible to combine part-time and other FWAs?
Yes, it is possible to combine FWAs. You might work two 10-hour days, a
part-time/compressed combination, or telecommute one of your scheduled
part-time days. To request such a combination, use the request and
review process, ensuring that the combination will not have any adverse
effects on customers, coworkers and other key contacts.
How can a manager compare the performance and results of a part-timer
to that of peers who work full-time and even more?
All employees should be evaluated based on the expectations of the
position and the results achieved. The critical factor for part-time is
that the position needs to be restructured appropriately. Results for
the part-timer should be proportional to those of a full-time schedule.
All other factors being the same, their performance could then be
recognized as equal.
I want to work part-time but it won't work in my work group. What can
I do?
For some jobs that aren't suited to part-time, job sharing might be an
alternative. Look at the tasks and responsibilities of the job and see
if they could be shared or divided with someone else. If that doesn't
work, talk with your manager to express your interest in working
part-time. You can also look at job listings to see if there are any
other suitable positions available at the Cancer Center.
Will my manager and others think I am not committed, or at least less
committed, if I opt to work part-time?
Because most managers at the Cancer Center are not experienced in managing
part-time employees, you should be prepared for the possibility of this
reaction. If you have always been hard working and committed and you
continue to demonstrate these characteristics while on an FWA, usually
others will see that you are serious about your work and career.
